Title: Tackling the recession : Employment-related public initiatives in the EU Member States and Norway
Abstract
As European economies slide into recession, companies face increasing financial difficulties as sales decline and prospects for a quick recovery recede. Consequently, a growing number of businesses are coming under threat, putting the jobs of more workers at risk. Already across Europe many companies have closed or reduced their scale of operations substantially and many jobs have been lost. This report examines the various measures being taken by governments and trade unions in different countries to try to maintain jobs, or at least to moderate the losses that occur.[Author vide Copyright]

Title: ERM Report 2009 : Restructuring in recession
Abstract
Over the course of 2008 and 2009, the world economy experienced one of the most serious recessions in modern times. In July 2009, 22 million men and women were unemployed throughout Europe, five million more than a year previously. Moreover, the situation may well still have further to play out: experience of previous recessions suggests that the full effect of the downturn upon employment has yet to materialise. Eurofound’s analysis of restructuring and job loss over the past year is collated and reviewed in this, the fourth annual report of the European Restructuring Monitor. Analysing the effects of the recession upon employment, it also looks in detail how particular sectors, countries and occupations have been affected, and examines a range of responses that have been taken to safeguard employment - at the company, Member State and European level.[Author vide Copyright]

Title: Social dialogue and the recession
Abstract
This paper aims to give a flavour of the latest developments across Europe and inform policy makers of topical issues. It will present measures taken in response to the recession (both employment market measures and financial stimulus packages), outline the extent of social partner involvement, and the actions taken so far by the social partners. According to the European Commission, there is still room for policy learning across Member States (European Commission, 2009c p. 42). The material for this report has been gathered mainly from Eurofound’s European Industrial Relations Observatory (EIRO) and from its European restructuring monitor (ERM), and is supplemented by findings from desk research.[Eurofound]

Title: Yearbook 2009 - Living and working in Europe
Abstract
This Yearbook sets out to distil Eurofound’s key findings during 2009. The first to be published as part of Eurofound’s four-year work programme ‘Better work, better life’, the 2009 Yearbook can deliver only a partial picture of Eurofound’s research findings, given the breadth of the work undertaken every year. However, as a glance through the Yearbook reveals, the impact of the recession dominated Eurofound research across its various areas of expertise. Moreover, Eurofound’s periodic, longitudinal research proved its worth, demonstrating the changes that have followed in the wake of the downturn to date.[Eurofound]

Title: Shifts in the job structure in Europe during the Great Recession : Technical background paper
Abstract
The report describes the impact of the ‘great recession’ on employment and the job structure in the EU27. Quintile charts are used to give a simple, graphical representation of the extent of employment change in a given period as well as an indication of how that change has been distributed across jobs of different pay or skill levels. This technical background paper provides the full set of quintile charts associated with the 'job shifts' report. [Eurofound]

Title: The social impact of the crisis - Background paper
Abstract
While there has been some recovery since the depths of the Great Recession in 2009, both output and employment levels remain lower than they were pre-crisis in the EU-27. Indeed, the severity of the recession has been such that output has yet to return to 2007 levels in each of the largest Member States, even in those like Germany where recovery has been most stable. Moreover, growth forecasts have been revised downwards throughout 2011 signalling the weakness of the recovery and the presence of negative global economic and financial risks. Most recently, on 21 September 2011, the IMF revised growth forecasts downwards throughout the developed world. [Eurofound]

Title: Industrial relations and working conditions developments in Europe 2010
Abstract
With a particular focus on the crisis and responses to it, this annual review highlights developments in working conditions and industrial relations in the EU Member States and Norway in 2010, both at national and EU level. At national level, the report examines key issues covered by collective bargaining (pay and working time) and looks at developments in social partner activity and industrial action. It also looks at company restructuring, the impact of the crisis and approaches to pension reform in light of demographic change. At European level, it reviews the year’s main events and trends in employment legislation and policy (in areas like paternity/maternity leave and working time), as well as in the European social dialogue at crosssectoral, sectoral and company levels. The final chapter focuses on training initiatives provided or supported by enterprises for their employees during the recession. [Eurofound]

Title: Recession and social dialogue in the banking sector : a European perspective
Abstract
The worldwide banking system is at the heart of the greatest economic crisis for at least 70 years. The crisis has strongly affected a sector that had already experienced significant changes in the preceding 30 years. Structural changes in the world economy, caused by globalisation processes and technological development, transformed the banking system internationally. On top of these global developments, the European banking system faced challenges caused by the European integration process and the creation of the European Single Market. [Eurofound]
