Title: Monitoring quality of life in Europe
Abstract
The challenges arising from low employment rates, an ageing population, changing family structures and social exclusion have pushed ?quality of life? issues to the front of the EU social policy agenda. The Foundation has launched an initiative to improve the monitoring and reporting of living conditions and quality of life in Europe. The first step was to develop a conceptual framework that would be appropriate for the Foundation?s mission to meet information needs of policy-makers among public authorities and social partners, specifically at EU level. This report examines key concepts, research and policy developments related to quality of life. It identifies gaps in information and develops a strategy for monitoring. It recommends focusing on a limited number of life domains and analysing the linkages between them, with time use regarded as a crucial aspect of the interrelationships. The conclusions prepare the way for a new survey of quality of life in 28 European countries. This survey will enable the Foundation to describe and analyse trends on a comparative basis and to identify emerging issues for future EU policy. [Herausgeber]

Title: First European Quality of Life Survey : Participation in civil society
Abstract
This analytical report addresses the interesting theme of participation in civil society, exploring the diverse range of activities that constitute active participation. A central part of the analysis involves identifying factors that influence participation, or in other words understanding why some people are active in civil society and why others are not. In doing so, it underlines that wide range of factors ? from individual to national resources and from sociological to historical influences ? that determine the level and type of participation.[Author vide Copyright]

Title: First European Quality of Life Survey : Quality of life in Turkey ; Summary
Abstract
The Foundation's research into quality of life in Turkey is largely based on findings from the EQLS, supplemented by national data, academic surveys and related social science studies. The research offers a comparison of the social circumstances of people in Turkey with those in the "old" EU15 Member States, the 10 new Member States admitted in 2004, and with Turkey's neighbours Bulgaria and Romania, who joined the EU at the beginning of 2007. Title: Annual work programme 2010
Abstract
This is the second annual programme of the four-year period and continues Eurofound’s work in the following three research focus areas: employment growth and supply of labour in changing labour markets, more and better jobs and higher productivity through partnership, and promotion of social inclusion and sustainable social protection. The 2010 programme gives more emphasis to the impacts of the current economic and financial crisis on the employment, working conditions and quality of life of Europeans. It will include crisis-related research on restructuring, labour markets and wages as analysed by the new European Jobs Monitor and studies on flexicurity. Longer-term impacts of the recession will be examined in the context of the combined effects of recession and demographic change, as well as studies of new forms of corporate ownership and governance; the impacts of the recession on social dialogue structures will also be considered.[Eurofound]

Title: ERM report 2012 - After restructuring : Labour markets, working conditions and life satisfaction
Abstract
The ERM Report 2012 focuses on the consequences of restructuring for employees. It examines which employees lost their job at the onset of the economic crisis, which of them found a new job and how both job loss and subsequent re-employment impacted on their overall life situation and satisfaction. It also looks at the impact on working conditions for employees who remain at the restructured firm. Both these studies, of those who lost their jobs and those who stayed at the restructured workplace, have never before been analysed by using common, EU-wide and representative, datasets. The report also provides an overview of recent restructuring using the ERM database. While restructuring cases reporting job loss have fallen since the peak of 2009, they still outnumber announcements of job gain. Several recent cases testify to serious problems in the once very promising alternative energy sector in Europe. The findings show that much of the recently announced job creation is in the hotels and retail sectors. Title: Quality of life in enlargement countries : Third European Quality of Life Survey – Croatia
Abstract
This paper is one in a series on EU enlargement countries covered by the European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS) 2012: Croatia, Iceland, Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia, Turkey and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. One way of measuring a society’s progress is by assessing the subjective well-being of its citizens, to complement the more usual economic information such as GDP. This report looks at three subjective well-being measures in Croatia, which joined the European Union in July 2013 as the 28th Member State: life satisfaction, happiness and optimism. On average, people in Croatia rate their life satisfaction at 6.8 on a scale of 1 to 10. This is below the average in the EU27 (7.1), where life satisfaction levels range from 5.5 in Bulgaria to 8.4 in Denmark. [Author vide Copyright]

Title: Quality of life in Europe : trends 2003-2012 ; 3. european quality life survey
Abstract
Eurofound has conducted the European Quality of Life Survey EQLS) in 2003, 2007 and 2011. This report compares the results from the three waves to provide evidence of trends and change in the quality of life of Europeans over a decade. It also examines whether differences across EU Member States have narrowed or remained stable. One of its findings is that subjective well-being has remained stable across the EU as whole, but it also finds that financial strain in households has grown in the wake of the economic crisis. The report proposes a more active approach to social protection, as lower household income is a strong negative influence on quality of life, and especially so in an economic downturn.[Author vide Copyright]

Title: Lebensqualität in Europa : Familien in der Wirtschaftskrise ; Zusammenfassung
Title (other): Quality of life in Europe : families in the economic crisis ; executive summary | Qualité de vie en Europe : les
familles dans la crise économique ; synthèse
Abstract
Title: Third european qualitiy of life survey : quality of life in Europe ; families in the economic crisis
Abstract
The economic crisis has reshaped the lives of millions of European citizens. But how has it affected families with children? Children are more at risk of poverty or social exclusion than the overall population in a large majority of EU countries; hence, it is important to understand how the crisis has affected the households in which these children grow up. This report describes the changing quality of life across the EU for different types of families with children and compares their living standards and social situation. Grouping the EU Member States into four categories on the basis of the flexibility or otherwise of their family policies, it also examines potential patterns that may be related to different family policy approaches. Themes that emerge from the findings include the particular challenges facing lone parents, the greater difficulties facing jobless families since the onset of the crisis, and the increasing extent of conflict parents experience in seeking to balance their work and family lives.[Author vide Copyright]

Title: Trends in quality of life : Turkey: 2003–2012
Abstract
Over the past decade, Turkey has undergone huge economic and social change. This report uses Eurofound’s European Quality of Life Survey to capture changes and developments in the quality of life of Turkish people, measured at three periods over the past decade: 2003, 2007 and 2012. The report examines the key improvements in quality of life over this period and investigates whether all social groups benefited equally. It explores the impact of recent policy changes and charts new expectations that may be emerging in Turkey. It finds that people in Turkey became much more satisfied with their lives over the period; they overtook the EU average in terms of satisfaction with health services and self- assessed health; poverty and material deprivation diminished. However, Turkey has a very high proportion of early school leavers, and gender inequality remains stark.[Author vide Copyright]

Title: Trends in quality of life : Croatia: 2007–2012
Abstract
The period 2007–2012, covered by the second European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS), was a critical time for Croatia, with EU integration on the horizon and the effects of the recession impacting on all strands of society. This report compares recent changes and trends in Croatia during this period with those in the rest of the EU, focusing on several key aspects of quality of life: standard of living, housing, employment, work–life balance, health and healthcare and quality of public institutions. It also charts people’s perceptions regarding social tensions, social exclusion, life satisfaction and happiness. While the findings reveal a lower standard of living overall in Croatia compared to the EU28 – almost a third of people reporting difficulties in making ends meet – as well as high levels of unemployment and job insecurity, there are positive developments in several areas: quality of housing, family life, subjective well-being and improved health and access to health services.[Author vide Copyright]

Title: Quality of life in urban and rural Europe : 3rd EQLS policy brief
Abstract
This policy brief highlights findings on a specific topic from Eurofound’s European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS) that is of particular interest from a policy perspective. It brings results of the analysis of these data together with evidence from other Eurofound projects to formulate a number of policy pointers. This policy brief focuses on differences in the quality of life between urban and rural Europe. About half (51%) of Europeans report that they live in a medium to large town (25%) or in a city or city suburb (26%), while 49% live in the open countryside, a village or small town. Since 2007, there has been a decrease in the number of people living in the open countryside and an increase in those living in medium to large towns.[Author vide Copyright]

Title: Developing a country typology for analysing quality of life in Europe
Abstract
As the European Union grows in size and diversity, it becomes increasingly challenging to summarise the impact of state actions on the lives of citizens. One approach to this complexity is to group countries based on characteristics relevant to quality of life. This report develops a country typology focused on quality of life as a multidimensional concept. It draws on (a) a review of the literature on country groups, (b) an empirical cluster analysis of macro-level indicators of state capacity and action and (c) an analysis of data on quality of life from the 2012 European Quality of Life Survey. This report develops a typology of the 34 countries included in this survey (the 28 EU Member States as well as the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Iceland, Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey). Drawing mainly on a synthesis of the literature, it goes on to recommend an eight-group system, which can be collapsed into five or three groups depending on the requirements of the analysis.
