Title: Die künftige Meerespolitik der EU: Eine europäische Vision für Ozeane und Meere
Title (other): Towards a future Maritime Policy for the Union: A European vision for the oceans and seas | Vers une politique maritime
Abstract
This Green Paper aims to launch a debate about a future Maritime Policy for the EU that treats the oceans and seas in a holistic way. It will underline that our continued enjoyment of the benefits that they provide will only be possible through a profound respect for them at a time when their resources are threatened by severe pressures and our increasing technological ability to exploit them. The accelerated reduction of marine biodiversity due notably to pollution, impacts of climate change and overfishing are warning signals that we cannot ignore. The Green Paper builds upon existing EU policies and initiatives and dovetails with the Lisbon Strategy. It seeks to strike the right balance between the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development. The Green Paper also hopes to contribute to a new awareness among Europeans of the greatness of their maritime heritage, the importance of the oceans in their lives and their continued potential to provide us with increased wellbeing and economic opportunity.[Author vide copyright]

Title: A global setting for European environmental monitoring — measuring what we must manage
Title (other): EEA International conference, 13–15 May 2009 ; Key conclusions
Abstract
The European Environment Agency (EEA) held a two and a half day senior-level meeting in Copenhagen (13–15 May 2009) on 'A global setting for European environmental monitoring — measuring what we must manage' to explore concrete ideas for building a sustainable and focused observing capacity that would best satisfy ongoing European needs, and provide inputs from GMES and other programmes to the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) and the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS).[Author vide copyright]

Title: The European environment – state and outlook 2010 : Marine and coastal environment
Abstract
European marine regions include the north-east Atlantic and Arctic oceans, and the Mediterranean, Black and Baltic seas. Human activities — such as fishing, aquaculture and agriculture — and climate change cause large and severe impacts on Europe's coastal and marine ecosystems. The EU objective of halting biodiversity loss by 2010 has not been met in either the coastal or the marine environment. Recognising the need for an integrated ecosystem-based approach to reduce pressures, the EU Integrated Maritime Policy allows for the development of sea-related activities in a sustainable manner. Its environmental pillar, the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, aims to deliver 'good environmental status' of the marine environment by 2020, and the Common Fisheries Policy will be reformed in 2012 with the aim of achieving sustainable fisheries. Complementary policy efforts include the EU Water Framework Directive and other freshwater legislation, and the Habitats and Birds Directives. [Author vide copyright]
