Title: Work and health in the European Union : A statistical portrait : Data 1994-2002
Abstract
This report is a statistical portrait of health and safety at work in the European Union. It constitutes the first joint analysis of the various statistical data available at EU level. It describes the general picture of the working life including characteristics of the European labour force and overall importance of ill-health due to work-related factors. Specific chapters describe statistical data on risk factors and outcomes of safety at work, work-related diseases and psycho-social problems linked to health and safety at work. The distribution of risk factors and the frequency of accidents at work, work-related diseases and work-related problems of psychosocial nature are described by age, gender, sector of economic activity, occupation and other relevant variables. The publication is based on statistical data collected by Eurostat over the period 1994-2002. Eurostat’s data are complemented with data from other sources, especially by data from the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working conditions. The data mainly cover the 15 Member States of the EU, but some preliminary data are available for trends in the incidence of accidents at work in the acceding and candidate countries. [Herausgeber]

Title: How Europeans spend their time – Everyday life of women and men – Data 1998 – 2002
Abstract
This pocketbook is the first compendium of European statistics on How Europeans spend their time. It aims to shed light on how women and men organise their everyday life in ten European countries. In particular, it provides information about the possibilities of reconciling professional and family life - statistics about the division between women and men of gainful and domestic work. Time Use Surveys (TUS) fill a number of gaps in the statistical information available in the social domain. For instance, they unveil gaps between women and men correlated to existing differences in their situation on the labour market and their participation in education, cultural activities and other spheres of life. TUS can also be used to produce, for example, statistics on voluntary work, care, mobility and leisure time. The statistical source for this publication is the national Time Use Surveys that have been conducted in several European countries. Ten European countries, Belgium, Germany, Estonia, France, Hungary, Slovenia, Finland, Sweden, United Kingdom and Norway, have been included in this presentation.

Title: Measuring progress towards a more sustainable Europe - Sustainable development indicators for the European Union - Data
1990-2005
Abstract
This publication, aimed at the general public as well as decision-makers, provides a first progress report on the implementation of the sustainable development strategy, launched by the European Council in Gothenburg in 2001. It focuses on quantitative trends, restricting the analysis to the set of sustainable development indicators (SDI) adopted by the European Commission in February 2005, and provides a useful complement to the Commission's communication on the review of the sustainable development strategy. Trends are assessed against policy objectives to inform the readers about the achievements, trade-offs, and failures in achieving the commonly agreed objectives. The data presented cover the period from 1990 to 2005 (or the latest year available). The emphasis is on the visualisation of trends – the actual data can be downloaded from the Eurostat SDI webpage. The wide range of themes covered illustrates both the practical implications of sustainable development for EU citizens, and the complexity of issues involved. This report should contribute to raising awareness of the opportunities and challenges lying ahead.

Title: Development of a methodology for the collection of harmonised statistics on childcare
Abstract
This working paper presents the results of a project about comparable statistics in the area of childcare in the European Union. The purpose was to define a methodology for the collection of harmonised data relating to demand and supply of childcare within the European union, and to compile and to analyse available data from national sources in EU Member States. A special interest was put on collecting national data for the targets on childcare agreed by the 2002 Barcelona European Council. [Herausgeber]

Title: Methodology for the calculation of Eurostat's demographic indicators
Abstract
Eurostat does not collect demographic indicators directly from countries, only raw numbers (detailed population and demographic events by sex and age). Injudicious comparison of rates established using different definitions of age might lead to misleading international comparisons (the choice of one or other definition resulting in significant differences, particularly for analysis by age). To overcome this problem and to ensure comparability between European Economic Area countries, Switzerland and the Balkan countries, Eurostat uses a conversion method that permits comparability of data compiled according to any definition from across Europe and thus allows the calculation of harmonised indicators. Until recent years, these indicators were produced with the help of a software package known as SYSCODEM. This package is now being replaced by a new computation system – that will be fully operational in 2005 - based on the methodology described in this publication “Methodology for the calculation of Eurostat’s demographic indicators” (G. Calot and J.P. Sardon). This methodology is similar to the one used by SYSCODEM in the past.

Title: Statistical analysis of socio-economic costs of accidents at work in the European Union
Abstract
Systematic information on costs of accidents at work is not available from administrative statistical data sources or regular surveys on health and safety at work in the EU. This publication presents a preliminary model to estimate these costs at EU level. The model is based on cost data from a specific questionnaire survey and administrative statistical data on numbers and characteristics of accidents at work and on labour costs.

Title: The production of data on homelessness and housing deprivation in the European Union: survey and proposals
Abstract
Homelessness and housing deprivation is perhaps the most extreme example of poverty and social exclusion in society today, both as a symptom and as a cause. However so far there are few official statistics on homelessness and housing deprivation, and these are rarely comparable between countries. This report highlights the various obstacles to a pan-European comparison, discusses the definition(s) of homelessness and housing deprivation and reviews systems for data collection, supporting the analysis with extensive appendices. It concludes with a series of concrete proposals. The report is considered to make an important contribution to the progress of efforts to gauge the scale and extent of homelessness and housing deprivation in a European context.
