Title: How Europeans spend their time – Everyday life of women and men – Data 1998 – 2002
Abstract
This pocketbook is the first compendium of European statistics on How Europeans spend their time. It aims to shed light on how women and men organise their everyday life in ten European countries. In particular, it provides information about the possibilities of reconciling professional and family life - statistics about the division between women and men of gainful and domestic work. Time Use Surveys (TUS) fill a number of gaps in the statistical information available in the social domain. For instance, they unveil gaps between women and men correlated to existing differences in their situation on the labour market and their participation in education, cultural activities and other spheres of life. TUS can also be used to produce, for example, statistics on voluntary work, care, mobility and leisure time. The statistical source for this publication is the national Time Use Surveys that have been conducted in several European countries. Ten European countries, Belgium, Germany, Estonia, France, Hungary, Slovenia, Finland, Sweden, United Kingdom and Norway, have been included in this presentation.

Title: Project on European integration indicators
Title (other): People's Europe
Abstract
This report is an attempt to gain a better understanding of public attitudes towards European integration by relating general and specific developments in societal values and expectations to underlying socio-economic trends. The analytical point of departure is the thesis that European values are gradually transformed as societies reach advanced stages of industrialisation and take on post-modern traits. As opposed to 'modern' society, 'post-modern' society is characterised by a popular emphasis on democratic political institutions and individual freedom, a diminishing prestige of science, technology, and rationality, and a rejection of traditional, bureaucratic, and hierarchical authorities. In view of this development, the report: (1) Traces general changes in European values; (2) Analyses the transformation in socio-economic structures, European value patterns, and attitudes towards European integration, based on an analysis of societal change and a grouping of the member states in a number of sufficiently distinct clusters, and; (3) Considers possible consequences for the European integration process. It outlines the steps taken in this project that could be used to inform an Irish project, and explores options for further development of the approach in an Irish context.[Author vide Copyright]

Title: Life satisfaction in an enlarged Europe
Abstract
Examining quality of life in 28 European countries, including the acceding and candidate countries as well as the current Member States of the EU, this report explores how people across Europe define quality of life. It looks at how they evaluate their lives and certain living conditions, what would increase their satisfaction, and how these evaluations can be explained by personal resources and/or the individual's position in the social structure. The analysis is based on data from the European Commission's Eurobarometer survey carried out in the acceding and candidate countries in Spring 2002 and standard EU 15 Eurobarometers. Title: Intercultural Education in Schools
Abstract
Intercultural Education is a pedagogic approach aimed at fomenting a tolerant and sensitive attitude to ethnic, cultural and religious differences between individuals. This study examines how Intercultural Education is provided for in the classrooms of selected EU countries, including France, Germany, Hungary, Italy and the UK. It finds that - in spite of the increased diversity of EU societies - political discourse is becoming less attentive to Intercultural Education in some countries.[European Parliament]

Title: Analysis of the Commission Communication ?a European Agenda for Culture in a Globalising World?
Abstract
This briefing paper provides critical reflections on the European Commission Communication: 'a European agenda for culture in a globalising world' of 10th May 2007. It highlights some potential points of progress that have been proposed to improve the EU's difficult and faltering attempts to deal with 'culture' since the Treaty of Maastricht, while also identifying important issues that require greater clarity. Culture is both a means and an end. The focus of the document's proposed actions is on instrumental applications of culture, although its language sometimes seeks to imply concern for the value of culture for its own sake (where policy and action are very constrained under Article 151 of the Treaty). Apart from what some might consider to be exaggerated claims for the results of the EU's small-scale cultural programmes, the Communication does not concern itself with the arts or heritage in their own right. There is an inbuilt elision (or confusion) of the non-commercial contemporary arts and creativity with culture which is produced and disseminated on an industrial scale. [European Parliament]
