This new report shatters some of these and provides a snapshot of the widely varying situation regarding quality of life issues in the enlarged Europe.Drawing on the results of Eurobarometer surveys carried out in the EU and the 13 acceding and candidate countries (ACC), it examines different quality of life issues such as social exclusion and integration, working conditions, income and deprivation, migration, and fertility and family support. Title: Preventing violence and harassment in the workplace
Title (other): Prévention du harcèlement et de la violence sur le lieu de travail
Abstract
The Foundation commissioned a project into violence and harassment in the workplace in 2002. This report publishes the findings of the project. It identifies the different forms and patterns of violence and harassment in the workplace in the EU and describes the recent upsurge in activity and initiatives with respect to violence and harassment within the legal arena, with new legislation addressing these problems recently enacted or in the pipeline in a number of countries. It also presents evidence of adverse effects on individuals, organisations and society, and assesses the potential financial costs. Finally, it analyses the factors that may contribute to and cause physical and psychological violence, and reviews a variety of good practices with respect to preventing and managing violence and harassment at work. Title: Migrants, minorities and education : Documenting discrimination and integration in 15 member states of the European
Union
Abstract
Foreword This study presents a unique collection of material on the situation of migrants and minorities in the European Union in the field of education. Covering the years 2001 to 2003, the study provides a comparative analysis of the state of integration, educational achievements and existing discrimination of minority pupils and students. The main focus of this study is on different forms of disadvantages and unequal treatment experienced by migrants and minorities in school, university and vocational education across the EU Member States. Besides this, an overview of good practices shows each country's efforts to improve the educational situation of these groups, e.g. by carrying out language programmes or offering inter-cultural training. The study finishes with selected recommendations to European Union institutions and Member States. School attainment and the quality of education have a decisive impact on the pupils' future employment opportunities. Unfortunately, evidence gathered in this study shows that despite numerous endeavours to improve the educational accomplishments of migrants and minorities, for the most part, their achievements lag behind that of the majority groups. However, in several countries young migrants of the second generation tend to perform better than their peers who arrived more recently. I hope that this report will raise public and official awareness on the issue of discrimination in the educational sector and will contribute to the creation of equal opportunities for all children and young people living in the EU. The data for this report was compiled for the EUMC by its RAXEN National Focal Points in each of the (at the time) 15 Member States. The EUMC then invited an independent researcher to bring this material together in the form of the current report. I would like to thank the author of the report Dr. Mikael Luciak and all the National Focal Points of the EUMC RAXEN information network for their effort and the comprehensive work they produced. Beate

Title: Finnish Working Life Barometer 2005
Abstract
Considerable differences exist between the working conditions of various sectors in Finland, with employees in the local government sector reporting particularly unfavourable working conditions. According to results from the Working Life Barometer 2005, employees in this sector find their work mentally and physically demanding, and experiences of violence at work are common. Nevertheless, measures to improve the quality of working life and productivity are being implemented in the majority of Finnish workplaces, and at least half of the employees have participated in training paid for by their employer in the past 12 months. Title: Quality of life in the Spanish workplace (report)
Abstract
Spanish workers' reported satisfaction with their work has been steadily increasing since 1999, according to the 2004 Spanish survey on quality of life in the workplace. Workers declare their satisfaction with health and safety conditions at work, work organisation and relationships with colleagues, while pay and participation issues are less satisfying. The survey also reveals that considerable differences remain between the sexes in carrying out household chores and in caring activities with children and older people. [Antonio Corral]
