Title: Environment statistics: pocketbook 2000 - Data 1980-1997
Abstract

Title: Measuring progress towards a more sustainable Europe - Sustainable development indicators for the European Union - Data
1990-2005
Abstract
This publication, aimed at the general public as well as decision-makers, provides a first progress report on the implementation of the sustainable development strategy, launched by the European Council in Gothenburg in 2001. It focuses on quantitative trends, restricting the analysis to the set of sustainable development indicators (SDI) adopted by the European Commission in February 2005, and provides a useful complement to the Commission's communication on the review of the sustainable development strategy. Trends are assessed against policy objectives to inform the readers about the achievements, trade-offs, and failures in achieving the commonly agreed objectives. The data presented cover the period from 1990 to 2005 (or the latest year available). The emphasis is on the visualisation of trends – the actual data can be downloaded from the Eurostat SDI webpage. The wide range of themes covered illustrates both the practical implications of sustainable development for EU citizens, and the complexity of issues involved. This report should contribute to raising awareness of the opportunities and challenges lying ahead.

Title: OECD/Eurostat Environment Protection Expenditure and Revenu Joint Questionnaire / SERIEE Environmental Protection
Expenditure Account: Conversion guidelines
Abstract
The conversion guideline describes the differences between the system of Environmental Protection Expenditure Account (EPEA) and the Joint Questionnaire (JQ) for Environmental Protection Expenditures. A number of countries are already using EPEA results as a basis for the data reporting in the JQ. However, comparison between EPEA publications and data reported in the JQ shows that there are often differences both in terms of data quantity and in actual figures. This publication is aimed at the compilers of these statistics and might require a specialist background to be understood.

Title: European Works Councils case studies: The ENI Group
Abstract
In September 1994, the Council of Ministers decided on a Directive on the establishment of a European Works Council (EWC) for the purposes of informing and consulting employees (94/45/EC). The emergence of EWCs is a major part of the development of an industrial relations system at European level. The works committee of the ENI Group (European Committee of ENI workers) was set up in 1995. The agreement was extended in 1998 and most recently renewed in 2001 in Rome. The date of the founding agreement places it as a voluntary agreement according to Article 13 of the European Directive. [Author vide Copyright]

Title: Alternative automotive fuels - supply, technological and environmental scenarios to 2030
Abstract
The consumption of energy and the direction of its further development has always depended on the choices made by consumers, producers, governments and societies. The selection was made according to the criteria costs, quality, reliability, security, convenience and social impacts. Governments have a key role in establishing the framework within which this can take place. The broad pattern of different fuels and propulsion technologies which currently exists will persist also in the future. However, not all technological options will have relevant shares in the market, some will exist in niche applications only. These niches can be technological niches which are widely spread over the world (such as current battery-powered electrical propulsion), or specific regional niches relevant to the specific characteristics of a region (as can currently be found on some islands). In future as in the present, the major role in transport will be played by a relatively small number of fuels and technologies. This study will focus on these fuels and technologies, it touches only very briefly or does not explicitly mention other existing, but not as relevant fuels and technologies. [European Parliament]

Title: European energy and transport : trends to 2030
Abstract
This report provides an update of the trends to 2030 published in 2003. The new baseline takes into account a high energy import price environment, the unsatisfactory economic growth of recent years and the more subdued growth prospects taking into account demographic developments. It includes, furthermore, new policies and measures implemented in the Member States. The results were derived with the PRIMES model by a consortium led by the National Technical University of Athens, supported by some more specialised models. These projections to 2030 encompass energy demand, transformation, imports and production by fuel and sector. They also give, in the annex, a breakdown of the main energy and transport variables by Member State. [Author s. copyright]

Title: Being Rich in Energy Resources : A blessing or a Curse
Abstract
Being rich in energy resources a blessing or a curse finds that an energy resource curse plagues many EU supplier states. This in turn directly affects Europes energy supply security and threatens to engulf Europe in unwanted hostilities at home and abroad. The study addresses seven issues including the evidence suggesting that a curse exists among Europes external energy suppliers, active programs to limit that risk, the significance of economic diversification, the applicability of dividend programs, the link between corruption and security of energy supplies, additional possible actions of the Union, and further threats posed by resource cursed countries. It establishes a definitive links between corruption and supply security, poor transparency, and inequality, and proves that a low level of economic diversification is a reliable indicator for the existence of the curse. It also finds that there are examples of excellence in recovering from and even converting the curse to a blessing. ... [European Parliament]

Abstract
[Author vide Copyright]

Title: Implementing Clean Coal Technologies - Need of Sustained Power Plant Equipment Supply for a Secure Energy Supply
Abstract
This study addresses the present and future role of high efficiency power plants based on Clean Coal Technologies (CCT). The overall objective of the study is to analyse the short and medium-term demand for the deployment of a low emission and high efficiency power plant using currently available CCT. The use of current available technology potential pro-vides a basis for ensuring the applicability and viability of new technologies. The European Commission has not only acknowledged the need to withdraw from a reliance on fuels not widely available within the EU, but also the necessity for further development of available technologies. It is all the more surprising that Clean Coal Technology plays a very minor part in the 6th Framework Programme for RTD.[European Parliament]

Title: Thermonuclear Fusion : Current status
Abstract
Between the discovery of its fundamental principles and the possible availability of commercially usable fusion power there will probably (and remarkably) be a period of around 100 years of intensive (and very expensive) R&D. It is difficult to say definitively whether fusion research is still more a matter of fundamental research or has progressed into the stage of development of an energy technology. In this context, this study addresses the following questions: - What is the cost of fusion research? - Do we need thermonuclear fusion? - Is thermonuclear fusion safe? - Is electricity from thermonuclear fusion economical? - Is electricity from thermonuclear fusion ecologically sound? - Is thermonuclear fusion socially sustainable? In the light of these questions, and the answers presented, the study then explores different options for how to proceed (or not) with the fusion R&D programmes.[Armin GRUNWALD, Reinhard GRÜNWALD, Dagmar OERTEL]
