Title: A new organisation of time over working life
Abstract
Changes to traditional gender roles and the labour market are forcing a rethink of conventional work-life patterns. Individuals are calling for a better quality of life, while employers require greater flexibility in the workplace. The idea of reorganising time over the whole course of working is one possible response. This report offers a conceptual framework to consider time arrangements and working life, linking this to measures to improve quality of life. It reviews changing patterns and preferences for time use as well as a range of measures, such as the accessibility of more paid leave during the ?stress? phases of life in order to compensate for raising the retirement age, and the introduction of social security structures to fit new time arrangements. The report is presented as a contribution to the debate on time policies and quality of life. [European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions]

Title: Work organisation and health at work in the European Union
Title (other): Organisation du travail et santé dans l'Union Européenne
Abstract
Based on findings from the Foundation?s Third survey of working conditions 2000, this report studies the connections between work organisation and working conditions. The authors first outline the typology of different forms of work organisation, from which they construct four distinct groups: ?constrained? work, ?flexible? work, ?autonomous? work and ?automated? work. Each of these organisational forms is shown to be subject to individual risks and injuries to health or personal dignity at the workplace. The report focuses on those groups which are more exposed than others and shows that the choice of work organisation can have an influence over a worker?s health and safety. [Herausgeber]

Abstract
In February 2002, the European Industrial Relations Observatory (EIRO) completed its fifth year of recording and analysing key developments in industrial relations across the European Union and Norway. The emphasis of this study is on collective bargaining and dialogue between the social partners, rather than on labour law or government initiatives. This booklet focuses on five main themes: lifelong learning; equality, diversity and non-discrimination; health and safety at work; flexibility and the work-life balance; and social dialogue and worker involvement. Title: Arbeitsbedingungen bei atypischer Arbeit
Title (other): Working Conditions in Atypical Work
Abstract
Title: A review of working conditions in France
Abstract
Working conditions in France have deteriorated in recent years, according to findings from the 2003 SUMER survey. The organisation of work has become increasingly complex and controlled, characterised by a higher pace and rate of work, more repetitive work, and an escalation in psychological pressure and stress. Moreover, work has become increasingly strenuous and workers tend to be more exposed to risks arising from their job. While there has been an overall decline in the number of industrial accidents, there has been a steady rise in occupational illnesses.

Title: Working environment risks and other job-related stress factors in Austria (report)
Abstract
The supplementary module of the Austrian Mikrozensus survey, carried out in June 1999, focused on working conditions. Employees and pensioners were asked about working environment risks and other stress factors associated with work-related illness. Title: Working time flexibility in Austria
Abstract
The flexibilisation of working time is considered to be one of the most significant transformations in work practices in the last decade, not only in Austria but in the European Union as a whole, with far-reaching implications for people's quality of life. This report on the subject examines findings from an ad-hoc module on work organisation and working time arrangements, based on data from the Austrian Mikrozensus survey as part of the European Labour Force Survey. It highlights the impact of non-standard and flexible working time arrangements on the work-life balance of workers. [Manfred Krenn]

Title: Work-related stress (report)
Abstract
Changes in the content and organisation of work in recent decades have resulted in an intensification of work, which is commonly regarded as a cause of stress. This report presents trends in the risks and consequences of work-related stress, and identifies how these can be prevented. The analysis is based on national surveys and research information available in the EU, as well as recent research findings. [Irene Houtman]

Title: Working conditions in France
Abstract
This report focuses on the deterioration of working conditions in France. Research over the past few years shows that work organisation has become increasingly complex and restrictive. Work rates and rhythms are faster, work is more repetitive, mental strain and stress are growing. The numbers of occupational accidents and illnesses are also rising. However, since the introduction of the 35-hour working week in 2001, employees have greater scope for taking initiative. [Author vide Copyright]
