Title: Time constraints at work and health risks in Europe
Title (other): Contraintes de temps dans le travail et risques pour la santé en Europe
Abstract
The third European survey on working conditions carried out by the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions highlights the risks and dangerous working conditions that continue to pose a threat to workers' health, as well as the increase in time and organisational constraints at work. A study based on the statistical use of the data gathered from the survey provides a great deal of information on the organisation of working time. It also explores the links between the organisation of working time and the duration of working time, and the health risks to which workers in the European Union are exposed. Two reports have been drawn up on the basis of this study. [Herausgeber]

Title: Part-time work in Europe
Abstract
Part-time work has become increasingly commonplace in the European Union. This report explores the profile of part-time workers and analyses the main factors underlying the development of part-time work practices. It also analyses the quality of work and employment conditions faced by part-time workers, such as the level of satisfaction with working hours, employment tenure and contract conditions, wage conditions, job content and career development, and exposure to hazards and working time determinants. This report has been elaborated within the framework of the European Working Conditions Observatory. It combines pan-European central sources (European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions, Eurostat reports and studies) and national information collected from a network of seven European correspondents. Title: Time and work : duration of work
Title (other): Temps et travail : la durée du travail
Abstract
This report looks at working hours and work schedules and their implications for living and working conditions. Most European countries have experienced a gradual reduction in working hours over the past two decades, accompanied by different working time arrangements and a variation in individual working hours and rhythms. While this has in general led to an improvement in working conditions, it can also be problematic for some people because of the disruption in work and the stress it generates. In addition, work itself has intensified and the flexibility of working time has resulted in variations in the pattern and duration of working times, the organisation of work in more or less regular cycles and irregular organisational procedures, all of which can lead to a disruption of the normal patterns of living. In short, it is not certain that recent developments in the area of working time and work rhythms have significantly improved the living and working conditions of employees. [Herausgeber]

Title: Working time options over the life course: New work patterns and company strategies
Abstract
Profound socio-economic, demographic and cultural changes currently under way in Europe are modifying the way in which people organise their time and income over the life course. The ageing population, globalisation, the transition from a standard working organisation model to more diversified and individualised structures and changes in the gender division of labour - these are all shifting the boundaries between people's work and personal lives. At the same time, changes in the timing of entry into and exit from the labour market have considerably reduced the time devoted to paid work. [Dominique Anxo]

Title: Working conditions and working time in an enlarged Europe (report)
Abstract
Working conditions and working time in an enlarged Europe presents a comparative study of working time in 10 central and eastern European countries (CEECs). Eight of these countries (the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia) are among the 10 new Member States (NMS) of the European Union, while Bulgaria and Romania are two candidate countries whose accession is set for 2007. The report makes extensive use of the Foundation survey data on working time and contrasts this with research available from other sources. [Mark Elsner]

Title: Reconciliation of work and family life and collective bargaining in the European Union: An analysis of EIRO articles
Abstract
Initiatives promoting reconciliation of work and family life have become popular across Europe as part of employment policies as well as social policies dealing, among other things, with the challenges of competitiveness, the renewed Lisbon targets for increased participation in the labour market, and an ageing population. This working paper is based on national reports and an analysis of EIRO articles on the subject. It examines the current position in the 25 EU Member States, Norway and the two acceding countries, Bulgaria and Romania, in terms of legislation and collective bargaining on the issue of the reconciliation of family and work life. It also looks at the positions of the social partners and reviews recent developments at EU level. [Stavroula Demetriades]

Title: Trends in quality of work in the Netherlands
Abstract
A diverse picture emerges regarding trends in quality of work in the Netherlands. It is difficult to draw firm conclusions on trends in working conditions because previously existing surveys have been replaced by newer ones. Nonetheless, work pace appears to be stabilising, while time pressure is decreasing. Some traditional risks, such as noise, dangerous work, physical load and shift work, are also stabilising; other risks, such as dirty work and bad smells at work, have declined. Contractual working hours have been reduced. At the same time, there increased autonomy in decision making, and (paid and particularly unpaid) overtime is also on the rise. [Irene Houtman]

Title: Working time flexibility in Austria
Abstract
The flexibilisation of working time is considered to be one of the most significant transformations in work practices in the last decade, not only in Austria but in the European Union as a whole, with far-reaching implications for people's quality of life. This report on the subject examines findings from an ad-hoc module on work organisation and working time arrangements, based on data from the Austrian Mikrozensus survey as part of the European Labour Force Survey. It highlights the impact of non-standard and flexible working time arrangements on the work-life balance of workers. [Manfred Krenn]

Title: Working time options over the life course: Changing social security structures
Abstract
This study focuses on a sample of six European countries - France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom. These cover a wide spectrum of the potential societal systems, with variations in labour market characteristics, welfare state regimes, gender relations, level of participation and working time patterns. As the selected countries diverge significantly in terms of social protection systems, working time and gender regimes, they illustrate the impact of the institutional structure on the gender division of paid work and income development over the life course.
