Title: Guidelines for the development and criteria for the adoption of health survey instruments
Abstract
The aim of the present document is to propose guidelines concerning the development and the adoption of instruments to be used in population health surveys in the European Union Member States (either at the national or at the European level). These guidelines can be used in order to follow-up and evaluate the projects for the development of instruments financed by European Commission and can provide the criteria to decide whether a specific instrument can effectively be recommended for health surveys in Europe.

Title: Work and health in the European Union : A statistical portrait : Data 1994-2002
Abstract
This report is a statistical portrait of health and safety at work in the European Union. It constitutes the first joint analysis of the various statistical data available at EU level. It describes the general picture of the working life including characteristics of the European labour force and overall importance of ill-health due to work-related factors. Specific chapters describe statistical data on risk factors and outcomes of safety at work, work-related diseases and psycho-social problems linked to health and safety at work. The distribution of risk factors and the frequency of accidents at work, work-related diseases and work-related problems of psychosocial nature are described by age, gender, sector of economic activity, occupation and other relevant variables. The publication is based on statistical data collected by Eurostat over the period 1994-2002. Eurostat’s data are complemented with data from other sources, especially by data from the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working conditions. The data mainly cover the 15 Member States of the EU, but some preliminary data are available for trends in the incidence of accidents at work in the acceding and candidate countries. [Herausgeber]

Title: Time constraints at work and health risks in Europe
Title (other): Contraintes de temps dans le travail et risques pour la santé en Europe
Abstract
The third European survey on working conditions carried out by the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions highlights the risks and dangerous working conditions that continue to pose a threat to workers' health, as well as the increase in time and organisational constraints at work. A study based on the statistical use of the data gathered from the survey provides a great deal of information on the organisation of working time. It also explores the links between the organisation of working time and the duration of working time, and the health risks to which workers in the European Union are exposed. Two reports have been drawn up on the basis of this study. [Herausgeber]

Title: Work environment statistics in Sweden
Abstract
Working environment surveys have been carried out in Sweden every two years since 1989. Since 1991, the surveys have included questions on work-related health problems. These surveys are designed to provide information against which reported occupational illnesses and injuries can be compared. This information also helps streamline reporting procedures. Findings reveal that work-related stress is on the increase, particularly in certain occupations. [Herausgeber]

Title: Work and health statistics in the Netherlands
Abstract
This report provides an overview of statistics relating to work and health issues in the Netherlands. A continuous rise in the pace of work of 1.5% per annum took place in the Netherlands over a 20-year period. This levelled off at national level in 1997, though some sectors show further increases. Trends regarding other risks show only minor changes. Over the last decade, work has become somewhat more autonomous, physical conditions have improved, but repetitive movements have increased. Health complaints, and more recently self-reported burnout in the Dutch workforce, have remained constant. In recent decades, however, the number of workers who retire into the disability system has been steadily rising, particularly those suffering from psychological disorders. [Herausgeber]

Title: Types of employment and health in the European Union
Abstract
This report analyses the latest findings from the Foundation?s Third European survey on working conditions, examining for the first time the associations between various types of employment and selected health indicators. It shows the impact of factors such as the physical environment, work organisation and psychosocial conditions on the health of workers. It concludes that a healthy, productive and well-motivated workforce is the key agent in socio-economic development. [Herausgeber]

Title: Work organisation and health at work in the European Union
Title (other): Organisation du travail et santé dans l'Union Européenne
Abstract
Based on findings from the Foundation?s Third survey of working conditions 2000, this report studies the connections between work organisation and working conditions. The authors first outline the typology of different forms of work organisation, from which they construct four distinct groups: ?constrained? work, ?flexible? work, ?autonomous? work and ?automated? work. Each of these organisational forms is shown to be subject to individual risks and injuries to health or personal dignity at the workplace. The report focuses on those groups which are more exposed than others and shows that the choice of work organisation can have an influence over a worker?s health and safety. [Herausgeber]

Title: Attitudes of opinion leaders from the five largest new member states on business, health, and the environment
Abstract
This opinion survey covers the core areas of business and the economy, health, diet and the environment. Opinion leaders and decision makers in Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Lithuania and the Czech Republic are confident that membership of the EU will bring material benefits to the countries that have just joined the EU but are worried about an increase in red tape. Many respondents canvassed in the survey were pessimistic about the ability of the EU to achieve the Lisbon targets, but most were confident that competitiveness would improve. Amongst the early winners were expected to be computer and IT services, as well as agriculture and food businesses. Boasting low costs and high levels of education in their countries, Central and East European software programming, e-business services and call centres are attracting investment from Western companies. A key strategic asset of these countries in terms of competing for this type of investment with the likes of China and India in the global marketplace is their location inside the EU's single market.[Urheber s. Title: Trends in quality of work in the Netherlands
Abstract
A diverse picture emerges regarding trends in quality of work in the Netherlands. It is difficult to draw firm conclusions on trends in working conditions because previously existing surveys have been replaced by newer ones. Nonetheless, work pace appears to be stabilising, while time pressure is decreasing. Some traditional risks, such as noise, dangerous work, physical load and shift work, are also stabilising; other risks, such as dirty work and bad smells at work, have declined. Contractual working hours have been reduced. At the same time, there increased autonomy in decision making, and (paid and particularly unpaid) overtime is also on the rise. [Irene Houtman]

Title: Working environment risks and other job-related stress factors in Austria (report)
Abstract
The supplementary module of the Austrian Mikrozensus survey, carried out in June 1999, focused on working conditions. Employees and pensioners were asked about working environment risks and other stress factors associated with work-related illness. The results of this module are comparable to those of the survey conducted in June 1994. [Marion Vogt]

Title: Trends for risk factors in the Danish work environment
Abstract
For the past five years, the Danish Working Environment Authority has monitored trends for selected occupational risk factors, applying data taken from the registry of occupational illnesses and symptoms. This report focuses on fatal and other serious accidents, heavy lifting and monotonous repetitive work, and psychosocial risk factors. These factors follow different patterns of development and are unevenly distributed by sector. Overall, 'traditional' physical exposure factors have decreased, whereas illnesses related to psychosocial factors have increased rapidly. Work-related psychosocial symptoms and illnesses are now the second most frequently reported group of occupational diseases in Denmark. [Rune Holm Christiansen]
