Title: The Caspian Sea
Title (other): enclosed and with many endemic species
Abstract
The Caspian is the largest enclosed sea in the world. It is brackish, with salinity up to 13.7 u0089. Significant changes in water levels occur. These, combined with the presence of large shallow areas, constitute a potential threat to biodiversity and especially to the many endemic species. The Caspian is rich in oil and gas. Increasing exploitation of these might pose a serious threat to biodiversity. The biological diversity of the Caspian Sea and its coastal zone makes the region one of the most valuable ecosystems in the world. The rate of biological endemism in the Caspian Sea is extremely high and it has a large number of representatives from almost all major phyla on earth. The Caspian, with its diversified habitats ranging from vast river systems to extensive wetland systems, supports a diverse flora and fauna with high natural productivity. The most important fauna of the Caspian Sea is the sturgeon, which constitute 85 % of the standing stock of the world's sturgeon population. The Caspian Sea lies on the crossing of migration routes of millions of migrating birds and offers refuge for a number of rare and endangered birds of the world ornithofauna. There is an urgent need to undertake an ecological survey of the coastal and marine species and habitats, their uses, values and threats, for each of the five Caspian states, which will result in an inventory of Caspian ecological resources. Strategies for the management of transboundary biodiversity, including threatened or endangered migratory species need to be developed. The major threats to the biodiversity of the Caspian Sea are: Regulation of the Caspian rivers, causing reduction in the area of delta vegetation, loss of reeds, cattail and bushes. Loss of vegetation resulting in loss of aquatic and coastal fauna. Many anadromous and semi-migratory species have been deprived of their natural spawning grounds. Illegal fishing and overfishing, dramatically reducing the sturgeon population. Sea-level changes, causing loss of habitats such as spawning gr

Title: The North-east Atlantic Ocean
Title (other): huge, deep and heavily exploited
Abstract
The North-east Atlantic Ocean is a part of the Atlantic Ocean and is dominated by deep ocean basins, except the Celtic Sea, the shelf along the Bay of Biscay and Iberian coast. The formation of the North Atlantic deep water is one of the driving forces for the thermohaline circulation of the world's oceans. The primary productivity in the open ocean is low, but is increasing from south to north and towards shore. The biodiversity is high, but several species in the area are endangered of which lack of sustainable fishery management is probably the most important threat. Main actual and potential threats to marine habitats and biodiversity in the Northeast Atlantic are: o Lack of sustainable regulation of fisheries: Overfishing, bottom trawling, discards, catch of non targeted species o Pollution from maritime transport through oilspills and TBT in antifouling paints There is a lack of information and/or monitoring on species, habitats and fish stocks in the Northeast Atlantic Ocean except for coastal waters. The North-east Atlantic Ocean is protected by the OSPAR convention and some other more global conventions. Nature protection is focussed on coastal areas and poor in all other parts of the ocean. Title: Analysis and comparison of national and EU-wide projections of greenhouse gas emissions
Abstract
Progress on combating climate change is assessed by comparing projections of greenhouse gas emissions for 2010 with the Kyoto Protocol (burden sharing) targets for the EU and the Member States as required under the EU greenhouse gas monitoring mechanism (99/296/EC). The report also compares national projections and EU-wide projections. Important differences were found between these two approaches, and further action is needed to improve the comparability, consistency and completeness of projections at national and EU level.[Author vide copyright]

Title: TANDEM_GIS I: A (feasibility) study towards a common geographical base for statistics across the European Union
Abstract
The NUTS (Nomenclature of territorial units for statistics) system as Eurostat uses it, contains some limitations when doing statistical analysis using geographical information system. The TANDEM GIS report analyses the feasibility of creating smaller statistical areas for the purpose of comparing statistical data at a level below the NUTS 5 (commune). In the report a prototype is presented which consists of two different systems: regular tessellations (grids) and irregular tessellations (polygons) as they are used in Finland and the United Kingdom. The conclusion of the report is that such a system is feasible but that further development is necessary. [Eurostat]

Title: The Mediterranean Sea
Title (other): blue oxygen-rich, nutrient-poor waters
Abstract
The Mediterranean Sea is oligotrophic: it is rich in oxygen and poor in nutrients. Oligotrophy increases from west to east. The fauna and flora is one of the species richest of the world and there is a high rate of endemism. Introduced alien species are increasing in the eastern basin. Compared with the Atlantic, the Mediterranean marine communities have many different species with generally smaller individuals (Mediterranean nanism). Eutrophication in coastal areas has almost certainly resulted in an increase in fish catches of some pelagic fish species in the formerly low-nutrient waters of the Mediterranean Sea. The immunosuppressive effects of contaminants arising from agriculture, industrial activity and population growth may have contributed to the severity of mass mortalities among marine mammals in the Mediterranean Sea and the additional chronic effects of organochlorines could hinder, or even prevent, recovery of individuals from pathogenic disease. Introduction of alien species through ballast waters, fouling, import and invasion has resulted in the establishment of dense natural populations of species. However, the impact of some intruders like the tropical alga Caulerpa taxifolia has had catastrophic effects on the natural environment. Fishing has resulted in overexploitation of several fish stocks in the Mediterranean. Mortality of the monk seal is mostly associated with fishing. Overexploitation by intensive collection has led to a serious decline in some corals and many shellfish.[Author vide copyright]

Title: Eutrophication in Europe's coastal waters
Title (other): Annex 1 | Annex 2
Abstract
Eutrophication is the enhanced primary production of marine algae due to excessive supply of nutrients from human activities, independent of the natural productivity level of the sea area in question. The main objectives of this report are to evaluate the causes, state and development of eutrophication in European coastal waters and identify areas where more monitoring data are needed to improve the assessment.[Author vide copyright]

Title: Remote sensing?s contribution to evaluating eutrophication in marine and coastal waters
Title (other): Evaluation of SeaWIFS data from 1997 to 1999 in the Skagerrak, Kattegat and North Sea
Abstract
The aim of this report is to examine whether estimates of the plant pigment chlorophyll-a from satellite data can support the evaluation of eutrophication in European marine and coastal waters. Satellite images are a good indicator of the occurrence of algal blooms in relation to eutrophication but overestimate true chlorophyll-a concentrations in open sea areas by 60-70% and even more in coastal waters. The report recommends using chlorophyll-a images from March to April/May as an indicator of eutrophication in the North Sea, Skagerrak and Kattegat since they reflect the magnitude of the spring bloom in these areas.[Author vide copyright]

Title: Testing of indicators for the marine and coastal environment in Europe
Title (other): Part 1: Eutrophication and integrated coastal zone management | Part 2: Hazardous substances | Part 3: Present state and
development of indicators for eutrophication, hazardous substances, oil and ecological quality | Part 3. Annexes
Abstract
The development of coastal indicators by EEA in the period 1998-2001 is described in this report, the first of three volumes. It explains the process and results of a study of potential state and pressure indicators for eutrophication. The report also describes the development of, and information gathering for, a response indicator measuring progress in integrated coastal zone management at subnational (regional) level. The report's primary aim is to test indicators for EEA reporting and not to undertake assessments.[Author vide copyright] | This report, the second in a three-volume series on development of coastal indicators by EEA, explains the process and results of a study of potential state and pressure indicators for hazardous substances in coastal waters. Due to a lack of reliable and comparable European data, the testing mainly concentrated on the method for aggregating data on six substances monitored in the North East Atlantic Ocean. The report's primary aim is to test indicators for EEA reporting.[Author vide copyright] | This report describes the present state and development of policy-relevant indicators for eutrophication, hazardous substances, oil and ecological quality in the marine and coastal environment in Europe.
