Title: Greenhouse gas emission trends in Europe, 1990?2000
Abstract
EU and candidate countries' progress between 1990 and 2000 towards reaching their targets under the Kyoto Protocol is assessed in this report. It shows which countries are on track, the greenhouse gas emission trends in each sector and the reasons for increases or decreases. The report supports the European Commission's annual evaluation report under the EU greenhouse gas monitoring mechanism and is a background report to the EEA Environmental Issue report No. 33 "Greenhouse gas emission trends and projections in Europe".[Author vide copyright]

Title: Analysis of greenhouse gas emissions trends and projections in Europe 2003
Title (other): Annex 1-7
Abstract
The purpose of this technical report is to analyse and present the progress of the European Union (EU) as a whole towards fulfilling its greenhouse gas (GHG) emission commitments under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Kyoto Protocol, and the contribution of each Member State (MS) towards achieving their 'burden sharing' targets. In addition, it provides a more limited analysis of the progress of 11 acceding and candidate countries towards their Kyoto Protocol targets.[Author vide copyright]

Title: Greenhouse gas emission trends and projections in Europe 2004
Title (other): Progress by the EU and its Member States towards achieving their Kyoto Protocol targets
Abstract
Projections show that the pre-2004 EU Member States (EU-15) could cut their total emissions to 7.7% below 1990 levels by 2010 with existing domestic policies and measures already being implemented and additional policies and measures currently planned. Plans by six EU-15 Member States to use credits from emissions-saving projects in third countries through the Kyoto Protocol's "flexible mechanisms" would contribute a further reduction of around 1.1%, taking the total to 8.8%, sufficient to achieve the EU-15 target.[Author vide copyright]

Title: Exploring the ancillary benefits of the Kyoto Protocol for air pollution in Europe
Abstract
This report explores the potential ancillary benefits for air pollution - in terms of reductions in pollutant emissions and changes in control costs and environmental impacts - resulting from different ways of implementing the Kyoto climate change protocol in Europe. It is based on a comparison of three climate policy scenarios, which differ in their use of the Kyoto mechanisms, with a baseline scenario for 2010.[Urheber s. copyright]

Title: Greenhouse gas emission trends and projections in Europe 2005
Title (other): Annex: Additional information on GHG trends and projections by sector and by Member States
Abstract
Projections show that the pre-2004 EU Member States (EU-15) could cut their total emissions to 9.3% below 1990 levels by 2010 with a combination of existing domestic policies and measures already implemented, additional policies and measures currently being planned and the use of credits from emissions-saving projects in third countries through the Kyoto Protocol's "flexible mechanisms". Thus the EU-15 Kyoto Protocol target could be achieved. All ten new EU Member States are on track to achieve their individual Kyoto targets.[Author vide copyright]

Title: Greenhouse gas emission trends and projections in Europe 2006
Abstract
The latest projections from pre-2004 EU Member States (EU-15) show that greenhouse gas emissions could be brought down to 8.0 % below 1990 levels by 2010. If all existing and planned domestic policy measures are implemented and Kyoto mechanisms as well as carbon sinks are used, the EU-15 will reach its Kyoto Protocol target. This projection relies on figures from several Member States which suggest that they will cut emissions by more than is required to meet their national targets. Existing domestic policies and measures will reduce total EU-15 greenhouse gas emissions by a net effect of 0.6 % from 1990 levels. When additional domestic policies and measures (planned but not yet implemented) are taken into account, the EU-15 could reduce emissions by 4.6 %. The projected use of Kyoto mechanisms by ten of the EU-15 will reduce emissions by a further 2.6 % at a cost of EUR 2 830 million. The use of carbon sinks, such as planting of forests to remove CO2, would contribute an additional 0.8 %. All ten new EU Member States are on track to achieve their individual Kyoto targets, despite rising emissions. This is largely due to economic restructuring in the 1990s.[Author vide copyright]

Title: Climate Change and European Fisheries
Abstract
Climate change is expected to result in several processes that can have an impact on the biological productivity of the marine ecosystems and on the distribution of marine resources. The purpose of the present study is to provide an analysis of the probable impacts and consequences of climate change on European Union marine fisheries and aquaculture. The basis of the study is a comprehensive review of approximately 200 relevant and up-to-date scientific literatures with particular reference to the fisheries resources that are relevant for the European Union fisheries both in the Atlantic and in the adjacent seas (Mediterranean, North Sea and Baltic). The effects of climate change on fisheries will affect a sector already characterised by full utilisation of resources. Changes in the productivity of the ecosystem will have a profound effect on the sustainability of the fisheries. Because of that; climate change is currently the target of very extensive research for estimating how fish stocks will develop in the future and other issues having a significant impact on European Fisheries. Seven possible policy options have been identified and are discussed in the study. [European Parliament]

Title: FOREST FIRES: causes and contributing factors in Europe
Abstract
The present study aims to provide a critical analysis of the causes that lead to the most relevant recent forest fires events in the EU, focusing in particular on Southern European countries. In particular, the study assesses to what extent forest fires have been influenced by forest management, extreme weather events and climate change, territorial planning/development regulations regarding the use of forests or burned areas, and inadequacy of response and lack of material capacity. To do so, two case studies were developed, one the Portuguese forest fires of 2003 and 2005, and one on the Greek fires of 2007[Samuela Bassi, Marianne Kettunen]

Title: An Overview of global Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Emissions Reduction Scenarios for the Future
Abstract
Quantifying current greenhouse emissions and anticipating their future evolution is an important analytical input to policymaking. However, accurate emissions monitoring and reporting are not simple, and processes are still being improved globally. Predicting the future yet more challenging; models that do so are heavily affected by assumptions to create scenarios of economic, social and policy change over time. As a result there is a wide array of visions of the future, the difference between which are important to understand. This study focuses on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from fossil fuels. Key drivers of these emissions are activity, economics, energy intensity and carbon intensity. As reducing GDP or population is not a likely aim of climate policy, the primary means of affecting emissions is to change the last two of the four factors: reducing the amount of energy needed per GDP, and decarbonising the fuel mix. Title: Greenhouse gas emission trends and projections in Europe 2007
Title (other): Tracking progress towards Kyoto targets | Annex: Additional information on greenhouse gas trends and projections by
sector and by Member State
Abstract
The latest projections from pre-2004 EU Member States (EU-15) show that the EU-15 can meet, and may even overachieve, its 2008-2012 Kyoto target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 8 % below 1990 levels if Member States implement now all additional policies being planned. Based on Member States projections, existing domestic policies and measures will reduce EU-15 greenhouse gas emissions by a net effect of 4.0 % below base-year levels. When additional domestic policies and measures (i.e. those planned but not yet implemented) are taken into account, the EU-15 could reduce emissions by an additional 3.9 %. The projected use of Kyoto mechanisms by ten of the EU-15 Member States will reduce emissions by a further 2.5 %. These governments have set aside EUR 2.9 billion to pay for this. The use of carbon sinks, such as planting forests to remove CO2, will reduce emissions by an additional 0.9 %. As a result, the EU-15 could achieve an 11.4 % reduction. All new Member States with a target expect to meet their target. The EU Emissions Trading Scheme will bring significant emission reductions between 2008 and 2012. It is expected to contribute a reduction of at least 3.4 %, part of which is already reflected in some Member States projections. This would represent a further reduction of at least 1.3 % to the total of 11.4 % from base-year emissions in the EU-15. [Author vide copyright]
