Title: Clean urban transport : Results from the transport research programme
Abstract
In this brochure, discover how research is contributing to policies to improve urban transport, and find pointers to topics for further investigation on the web. Transport makes a vital contribution to the economy and society. But these benefits are being lost through traffic growth, particularly in urban areas as a result of congestion, pollution and other factors. Innovative policies can reduce these negative impacts and promote more sustainable patterns of mobility.

Title: Alternative automotive fuels - supply, technological and environmental scenarios to 2030
Abstract
The consumption of energy and the direction of its further development has always depended on the choices made by consumers, producers, governments and societies. The selection was made according to the criteria costs, quality, reliability, security, convenience and social impacts. Governments have a key role in establishing the framework within which this can take place. The broad pattern of different fuels and propulsion technologies which currently exists will persist also in the future. However, not all technological options will have relevant shares in the market, some will exist in niche applications only. These niches can be technological niches which are widely spread over the world (such as current battery-powered electrical propulsion), or specific regional niches relevant to the specific characteristics of a region (as can currently be found on some islands). In future as in the present, the major role in transport will be played by a relatively small number of fuels and technologies. This study will focus on these fuels and technologies, it touches only very briefly or does not explicitly mention other existing, but not as relevant fuels and technologies. [European Parliament]

Title: Production Capacity of the Renewable Energies in the European Union
Abstract
The twofold aim of this study is, on the one hand, to outline the prospective production and capacity of renewable energy sources (RES) in the EU by 2010 in the context of current EU policies and targets and, on the other, to provide recommendations for policy makers to adopt adequate options and instruments for providing a vigorous and lasting impetus to RES development in the EU. The study is based on an analysis of trends in renewable energy technology (RET) development, available potentialities and costs, as well as current production and capacity levels. Policy recommendations are drawn from the gaps identified, the recognition of the barriers to RES development, and the clarification of potential policy options and tools. Title: The Precautionary Principle in the Information Society - Effects of Pervasive Computing on Health and Environment
Abstract
Title: Thermonuclear Fusion : Current status
Abstract
Between the discovery of its fundamental principles and the possible availability of commercially usable fusion power there will probably (and remarkably) be a period of around 100 years of intensive (and very expensive) R&D. It is difficult to say definitively whether fusion research is still more a matter of fundamental research or has progressed into the stage of development of an energy technology. In this context, this study addresses the following questions: - What is the cost of fusion research? - Do we need thermonuclear fusion? - Is thermonuclear fusion safe? - Is electricity from thermonuclear fusion economical? - Is electricity from thermonuclear fusion ecologically sound? - Is thermonuclear fusion socially sustainable? In the light of these questions, and the answers presented, the study then explores different options for how to proceed (or not) with the fusion R&D programmes.[Armin GRUNWALD, Reinhard GRÜNWALD, Dagmar OERTEL]

Title: Comparative analyses on national measures to combat discrimination outside employment and occupation: Mapping study on
existing national legislative measures and their impact in tackling discrimination outside the field of employment and
occupation on the grounds of sex, religion or belief, disability, age and sexual orientation, VT/2005/062
Abstract
The purpose of this report is to set out in brief form the law across the EU Member States, Bulgaria and Romania relating to discrimination on grounds of sex, sexual orientation, disability, religion and belief and age (the 'relevant grounds'), to the extent that such discrimination falls outside the current scope of EC law. The report is drawn up on the basis of detailed reports in respect of each of the countries surveyed, and a further five ('comparator') countries: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the United States of America. Much of the report focuses on the law of the existing and prospective EU Member states but occasional reference is made to the comparator countries. [Author vide copyright]

Title: Review of security measures in the 6th research framework programme and the preparatory action for security research
Title (other): Compte rendu des mesures de securite dans le 6e programme cadre de recherche et de l?action preparatoire en matiere de
recherche sur la securite
Abstract
Security research has constituted, over the pas few years, a strong priority for Community policies in the field of scientific research, industry, and justice and home affairs. Community efforts in this domain have been channelled, over the period 2002-2006, through the 6th Framework programme (FP6) and the Preparatory action on security research (PASR). FP6 has sustained, within its various thematic priorities, a series of projects and programmes dealing with technological developments in the field of security. The PASR is a targeted initiative of the European Commission aiming at developing contacts and partnerships between the actors of the European security industry, the public actors, and research bodies. PASR activities, in this respect, have mainly focused on technological development and the networking of actors, in anticipation for the thematic programme on security now established under FP7. The analysis of the contents of research being conducted under the FP6 and PASR is very revealing in this respect: it highlights the fact that this research is mainly oriented towards technological development as such, and unquestioningly takes security as a norm and a fundamental value. In this regard, and despite the odd exception, European security research does not include in its scope the effects that increasingly sophisticated technologies of control and surveillance can have on individual freedom and rights, particularly with regard privacy and the protection of personal data. It does not address the necessary limits to security. The point, then, is to envisage the modalities through which a reflection on the ethical, legal, political and social implications of security technologies can be strengthen and further integrated in European security research.[European Parliament] | La recherche en matière de sécurité constitue, depuis quelques années, une priorité affichée dans le domaine des politiques communautaire, quil sagisse des politiques scientifiques, industrielles, ou de justice et affaires intérieures.

Title: Cross-border Mobility of Young Researchers
Abstract
Mobility is important not only for the career development of researchers, but also for scientific and economic performance as a whole. Researcher mobility has been low in many Member States and there are several obstacles for mobility especially for young researchers. At the same time Europe is facing increasing competition over a highly educated workforce. As a response, the EU and the Member States have introduced several measures to support the mobility of researchers. Despite these efforts the progress has remained slow and further effort is still needed to facilitate mobility in particular of young researchers. [European Parliament]
