Title: Finnish quality of work life surveys
Abstract
This report examines the findings of Statistics Finland's quality of work life surveys. It considers the many changes that have taken place in the working environment over a period of 25 years. Although there have been important improvements, the surveys reveal that certain physical work environment problems remain to be resolved, while many new, more social and psychological work environment problems have also arisen. Title: Time use survey highlights changing working conditions - Latvia
Abstract
The latest population time use survey indicates changes in the profile of time use in Latvia in 2003, compared with 1996. In 2003, all workers used a greater part of the total weekly time budget (168 hours) for personal care and sleep; however, men spent a greater part of the total time in paid work. Moreover, there was an increase in travel or commuting time. The survey also shows differences in time use between those in paid employment and others, according to sex and geographical location. Time use surveys are primarily a quality of life indicator, but they also contain useful data regarding working conditions. [Author vide Copyright]

Title: Survey highlights rise in psychosocial demands at work - Denmark
Abstract
The National Research Centre for the Working Environment, formerly the National Institute of Occupational Health, has conducted the fourth Danish Work Environment Cohort Study (DWECS) covering the five-year period 2000-2005. The 2005 results indicate no clear trend of overall better or worse conditions for workers. Nevertheless, an increase in psychosocial demands at the workplace has been identified, such as a high pace of work, a demanding workload and emotional demands. Conversely, the study also reveals increases in decision latitude, better future prospects in the job and more support for workers from superiors. However, considerable differences among workers persist in relation to jobs, sectors and gender. [Author vide Copyright]

Abstract
The Foundation's research into quality of life in Turkey is largely based on findings from the EQLS, supplemented by national data, academic surveys and related social science studies. The research offers a comparison of the social circumstances of people in Turkey with those in the "old" EU15 Member States, the 10 new Member States admitted in 2004, and with Turkey's neighbours Bulgaria and Romania, who joined the EU at the beginning of 2007. Title: Women living alone : evaluation of their specific difficulties
Abstract
Demographic and social changes in the European Union in the last decades have led to a significant increase in the number of single households and in women living alone. Modern welfare systems only partially respond to the needs of women living alone. Across Europe the different welfare systems have different impacts on the female condition, not only in relation to the reduction in gender gaps, but also in relation to services and provisions needed when living alone, especially as single mothers or as elderly women. This study presents the specific difficulties of women over 25 years of age living alone in the European countries, highlighting national differences in the incidence and main characteristics of women living alone, and analyses the policies adopted to support their economic and living conditions, focusing on pension and assistance schemes and providing examples of good practices and policy recommendations. Title: ESS Standard for Quality Reports
Abstract
The ESS Handbook for Quality Reports and the ESS Standard for Quality Reports will assist National Statistical Institutes and Eurostat in meeting the Code of Practice standards by providing recommendations for preparing comprehensive quality reports for the full range of statistical processes and their outputs. Both documents provide much more detailed guidelines compared to the 2003 versions and are built around the fifteen principles articulated in the Code of Practice. The coverage of statistical processes using administrative sources or involving multiple data sources has been improved and more quality and performance indicators have been included. The Standard and the Handbook are applicable to National Statistical Institutes and Eurostat in their roles as producers, compilers and disseminators of statistics. A key objective is to promote harmonised quality reporting across statistical processes and across Member States and hence to facilitate cross-comparisons of processes and outputs. [Eurostat]

Title: Harmonised European time use surveys : 2008 guidelines
Abstract
This publication presents an updated version of the guidelines on the Harmonised European Time Use Surveys (HETUS). The first version, finished in 2000, was based on the recommendations of the final report on Time Use pilot surveys and on the discussions carried out with experts of the National Statistical Institutes. The project was also actively supported by the Economic Commission for Europe. The 2000 HETUS guidelines have been the cornerstone of the European Time Use harmonisation process. As a major example stands the web-tool making for flexible and easy database tabulation for fifteen European countries. It was developed by Statistics Finland and Statistics Sweden with financial support of the European Commission. Based on experience gained, countries requested an update subject to two principles: comparability with previous guidelines and simplification. A task force was established by the Time Use Survey working group in June 2005, and a consultation process with national statistical bodies on the scope of revision and on the national practices was launched. The proposals of the Task Force were discussed by the Time Use Survey working group at its meeting of April 2008 and, later, by written procedure. The current document is the result of those discussions. [Eurostat]
