Title: Die Patentierbarkeit von Computerprogrammen: Diskussion zu Rechtsvorschriften auf europäischer Ebene über den
patentrechtlichen Schutz von Software
Title (other): The patentability of computer programs: Discussion of European-level legislation in the field of patents for software |
La brevetabilité des programmes d?ordinateur: Étude sur une législation communautaire dans le domaine des brevets de
logiciels
Abstract
Study on the desirability of EC level legislation in the area of software patents. It is based on a comparative analysis of the present state of the law, and the advantages and disadvantages appearing from current practice in the EC Member States, the United States and Japan. While its principal focus is on software patents, the study also includes commentary on the patenting of 'business methods', as patents in this area are closely related to software patents. It has also considered the proposal for a 'Directive on the patentability of computer-implemented inventions', that was published on February 20, 2002.[European Parliament]

Title: Software defined radio
Abstract
A software-defined radio (SDR) is one that has the capability – through use of programmable hardware (handsets) controlled by software - to tune to any frequency band and receive any modulation across a large frequency spectrum. At present, certain radio frequencies have to be reserved for particular functions e.g. the emergency services. But the proliferation of such reserved frequencies is beginning to crowd out the airwaves i.e. to create a shortage of bandwidth. SDR, however, should be able to overcome these problems through being able to achieve what is referred to as ‘cognitive spectrum management’, whereby it would be able to identify spare bandwidth flexibly on a case-by-case basis. This sharing of the spectrum that SDR allows is a very important capability... [Stephen Pullinger]
