Title: Fisheries research organisations and research programmes in the European Union, Iceland, Israel and Norway
Abstract
This publication aims to inform the scientific community, administration and private industry about research organisations and main research institutes involved in fisheries and aquaculture. It completes the European Directory of Research Centres in the Fisheries Sector, edited by the Commission in 1994, which focuses more specifically on a detailed list of all institutes involved in research in the fisheries sector. All EU countries (except Luxembourg) plus three associated countries, Norway, Iceland and Israel, have contributed with a national presentation of their research scheme. Main research institute(s) is(are) listed first.[Author vide copyright]

Title: Fische der Nordsee
Title (other): Fish of the North Sea | Poissons de la mer du Nord
Abstract
Copyright]

Title: Ostseefische
Title (other): Fish of the Baltic Sea | Poissons de la mer Baltique
Abstract
Marine species and freshwater species cohabit in the Baltic, with marine species concentrated in the west where water salinity levels are highest while freshwater species are found in the east and north where salinity levels are relatively low. As in other seas, overfishing has taken its toll on some important species, such as cod and salmon. Under the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) measures are being taken to promote sustainable fishing activities in the Baltic. This brochure provides the reader with an overview of the Baltic fisheries, with the name of the most common species found in the region given in the EU's 20 official languages, along with the volume of catches of these species and the fishing gear used.
Title (other): European code of sustainable and responsible fisheries practices | Code européen de bonnes pratiques pour une pêche
durable et responsable
Abstract
Title: Classification and analysis of the scientific domains covered by the the biological studies 1997-2000 in support of the
CFP
Abstract
The over-exploitation of fish stocks has had a significant negative effect on fishermen's income, the balance of the marine ecosystem and the supply of fish to the EU market. Reliable scientific advice is necessary to achieve sustainable fisheries. To improve the basis for advice, particular attention has been devoted to support studies on data collection by direct measures (research surveys) and indirect methods (market sampling, statistical analysis, biological sampling) and other areas such as gear selectivity, discards, CPUE, monitoring and control. The Community Financial Support provided by DG FISH for the biological studies during the 1997-2000 period amounted to nearly u008076 millions, corresponding to 182 RDT projects, selected on a yearly basis. The selection of proposals in response to the calls for proposals was carried out by independent experts. The scientific quality of the research, the relevance to the call and the potential impact for the CFP were considered in priority allowing a certain degree of innovation in the proposals. The main objective of this report is to create a comprehensible classification of the 182 Biological Studies into scientific domains.[Author vide copyright]

Title: Synopsis of selected R&D; projects in the field of fisheries and aquaculture
Abstract
In the reform of the common fisheries policy (CFP) adopted in December 2002, emphasis was put on the improvement of the scientific basis for the advice needed by the EU for fisheries management. Today, more than ever before, when so many fish stocks are heavily exploited, decisions on fisheries management need a solid basis in science. The relevance and effectiveness of measures taken under the CFP depend to a large extent on the quality and timeliness of the scientific advice on which they are based. The European Commission also recognises the importance of aquaculture in the framework of the reform and the necessity to develop a strategy for the sustainable development of this sector supported by EU-wide research. Finally, assuring the quality and safety of the seafood supply in response to consumer needs while enhancing the competitiveness of the European seafood industry is also a priority for the Fisheries DG. Research activities carried out under the fifth framework programme in the field of fisheries concerned three key actions of the thematic programme 'Quality of life' (QoL): 'Food, nutrition and health', 'Control of infectious diseases' and 'Sustainable agriculture, fisheries and forestry, and integrated development of rural areas including mountain areas'. Special attention was given to quality monitoring and traceability throughout the food chain, to the development of strategies to identify and control infectious diseases, to the improvement of the scientific basis for fisheries management, to the improvement of aquatic production, to the integration of environmental requirements, and to the investigation of the economic dimension of sustainable fishing and aquaculture.[Author vide copyright]

Title: Regional socio-economic studies on employment and the level of dependency on fishing : lot No.23 coordination and
consolidation study / final report
Abstract
One of the principal benefits of fisheries is the socio-economic impact on jobs and incomes, not just in fishing, but also in up- and down stream activities. The fishery sector is subject to competitive pressures which impact on labour, as do regulatory requirements and resource and capacity management measures. In the European Union, as elsewhere, fisheries-related employment frequently falls in areas which have few other alternative economic activities and these impacts can have a disproportionately negative effect on living conditions. Present policy within the European Union is to compensate for these negative effects, and to provide support for alternative employment through investments in job creation and training programmes. It is vital that the areas whose local economies are the most dependent upon the fishery sector are identified in order that efforts to reduce the negative impact of the fleet reductions can be targeted effectively.
