Title: EU action against climate change
Title (other): EU emissions trading ? an open scheme promoting global innovation
Abstract
The European Union is committed to global efforts to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions from human activities that threaten to cause serious disruption to the world's climate. Building on the innovative mechanisms set up under the Kyoto Protocol to the 1992 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) - joint implementation, the clean development mechanism and international emissions trading - the EU has developed the largest company-level scheme for trading in emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), making it the world leader in this emerging market. The emissions trading scheme started in the 25 EU Member States on 1 January 2005. A key aspect of the EU scheme is that it allows companies to use credits from Kyoto's project-based mechanisms, joint implementation (JI) and the clean development mechanism (CDM), to help them comply with their obligations under the scheme. This means the system not only provides a cost-effective means for EU-based industries to cut their emissions but also creates additional incentives for businesses to invest[Author vide copyright]

Title: Environment and health
Abstract
Public concerns, evidence from research and increasing scientific knowledge are all driving widespread discussions on environment and health problems. The issue of environment and health is characterised by multi-causality with different strengths of association. This means that the links between exposures and their health consequences depend on the environmental pollutants and diseases being considered, but are also influenced by factors such as genetic constitution, age, nutrition and lifestyle, and socioeconomic factors such as poverty and level of education.[Author vide copyright]

Title: Sustainable use and management of natural resources
Abstract
This report focuses on our ability to continue to provide for our needs by drawing on the natural world. Given the broad coverage of the term 'natural resources', a decision was made at the outset to focus the analysis on a selection of natural resources: fisheries, forestry, water, fossil fuels, metals and construction minerals, and land use. The factors behind this choice included ensuring a mix of renewable and non-renewable resources, the policy relevance and political importance of the resources, and the ability to illustrate the various policy approaches.[Author vide copyright]

Title: Urban sprawl in Europe
Title (other): The ignored challenge
Abstract
The growth of cities in Europe has historically been driven by increasing urban populations. However, today, even where there is little or no population pressure, a variety of factors are still driving urban sprawl. These are rooted in the desire to realise new lifestyles in suburban environments, outside the inner city. The mixture of forces behind these trends include both micro and macro socio-economic trends, which are resulting in sprawling cities all over Europe. The strategies and instruments to control sprawl strongly depend on today's realities of multiple and interacting levels of governance, from local to European. This is particularly true with regard to the substantial financial flows that shape planning budgets. At present, planning policies often reflect the logic of the market. They would better reflect a vision of urban development, in which environmental and social considerations are fully embedded in spatial planning policies at all steps of the policy cycle from problem identification and policy design through to the implementation and ex-post evaluation stages. Title: The road from landfilling to recycling: common destination, different routes
Abstract
The EEA and its Topic Centre on Resource and Waste Management has carried out a survey of municipal waste policies and trends across the EU-25, and has consolidated the results into one easily-referenced source: a set of 25 country factsheets, freely available at http://waste.eionet. europa.eu/etcwmf/publications/factsheet. The factsheets contain information about: u0095 national legislative frameworks on waste; u0095 national policies, implemented or planned, to shift waste management practices in a less environmentally harmful direction according to the waste hierarchy; u0095 data on waste generation and management; u0095 list of tools and instruments, implemented or planned at national or regional level that aim to manage municipal waste and used tyres according to the waste hierarchy.[Author vide copyright]

Title: Forest fires in Europe in 2006
Abstract
This is the seventh 'Forest Fires in Europe' report published by the European Commission. The report is normally published in summer of the following year in order to allow the different countries to compile official statistics of the fire season regarding the total number of forest fires and burned area. The fire season of 2006 can be defined as a relatively mild season, and if the total number of fires was still relatively high, the total burned area was definitely well below the average. In general there were not many extreme fire events and only the large fires that devastated Galicia (Spain) in the first two weeks of August, were object of great concern. The 'Forest Fires in Europe 2006' report describes the latest developments in terms of support to forest fires fire prevention activities in the European Union, presents historical statistics in terms of number of fires and burned area, and describes the fire season in each of the contributing countries as well as the results from the European Forest Fire Information System: EFFIS Danger Forecast, that provides daily the 1, 2, and 3 day fire danger forecasts, EFFIS Rapid Damage Assessment, that performs the mapping and evaluation of land cover damages caused by fires of at least 50 ha, and includes also a summary of the impact of forest fires in Natura2000 areas in Galicia, Spain, in 2006.[Author vide copyright]

Title: Forest fires in Europe
Title (other): 2001 fire campaign
Abstract
The present second report on forest fires in Southern Europe builds upon statistical data provided by the Member States, i.e. data for the burnt area and numbers of forest fires occurred in the period 1980 to 2001. Its objective is to provide an overview on the latest evolution of forest fires in the Southern Member States of the European Community. Moreover, it reflects the preventive actions as well as the reactions undertaken at national level when being exposed to particular situations like extreme hot weather or planning of dispatching fire fighting equipment in periods of very high fire risks in the whole country.

Title: Umweltorientierte Beschaffung! ? Ein Handbuch für ein umweltorientiertes öffentliches Beschaffungswesen
Title (other): Buying green! ? A handbook on environmental public procurement | Acheter vert! ? Un manuel sur les marchés publics
écologiques
Abstract

Title: EU Policy for a sustainable use of pesticides
Title (other): The story behind the Strategy
Abstract
The Sixth Environment Action Programme (6th EAP) is a programme of Community action on the environment with key objectives covering a period of ten years. The priorities of the 6th EAP are climate change, nature and biodiversity, environment, health and quality of life, and natural resources and waste. Within these key priorities, the 6th EAP calls for the development of seven thematic strategies including a coherent and integrated strategy on the sustainable use of pesticides. The Thematic Strategy on the Sustainable Use of Pesticides is a coherent and integrated policy on the use-phase of pesticides. Its objectives are: (i) to minimise the hazards and risks to health and the environment stemming from the use of pesticides; (ii) to improve controls on the use and distribution of pesticides; (iii) to reduce the levels of harmful active substances used, in particular by substituting the most dangerous with safer alternatives; (iv) to encourage low-input or pesticide-free cultivation; (v) to establish a transparent system for reporting and monitoring the progress made in achieving the objectives of the Strategy.[Author vide copyright]
