Title: Reconciliation of work and family life and collective bargaining in the European Union: An analysis of EIRO articles
Abstract
Initiatives promoting reconciliation of work and family life have become popular across Europe as part of employment policies as well as social policies dealing, among other things, with the challenges of competitiveness, the renewed Lisbon targets for increased participation in the labour market, and an ageing population. This working paper is based on national reports and an analysis of EIRO articles on the subject. It examines the current position in the 25 EU Member States, Norway and the two acceding countries, Bulgaria and Romania, in terms of legislation and collective bargaining on the issue of the reconciliation of family and work life. It also looks at the positions of the social partners and reviews recent developments at EU level. [Stavroula Demetriades]

Title: Finnish Working Life Barometer 2005
Abstract
Considerable differences exist between the working conditions of various sectors in Finland, with employees in the local government sector reporting particularly unfavourable working conditions. According to results from the Working Life Barometer 2005, employees in this sector find their work mentally and physically demanding, and experiences of violence at work are common. Nevertheless, measures to improve the quality of working life and productivity are being implemented in the majority of Finnish workplaces, and at least half of the employees have participated in training paid for by their employer in the past 12 months. Title: A review of working conditions in France
Abstract
Working conditions in France have deteriorated in recent years, according to findings from the 2003 SUMER survey. The organisation of work has become increasingly complex and controlled, characterised by a higher pace and rate of work, more repetitive work, and an escalation in psychological pressure and stress. Moreover, work has become increasingly strenuous and workers tend to be more exposed to risks arising from their job. While there has been an overall decline in the number of industrial accidents, there has been a steady rise in occupational illnesses.

Title: Employment in social care in Europe
Abstract
In the context of an ageing population and increasing demand for care services in the European Union, there is growing concern about the supply of suitably qualified care workers. Low pay, low status, and high rates of turnover and burnout make it difficult to attract workers to the care sector and to keep them in their jobs. This report looks at a range of innovative approaches, in 11 EU Member States and two acceding countries, aimed at increasing the supply of qualified workers who can meet the growing demand for care services. It highlights a number of policy strategies that should be developed to address this issue, such as improving the public image of care work, raising the qualification profile of care workers, increasing salary levels, attracting more qualified migrants to the profession, achieving a better age and gender balance, and improving overall working conditions for care workers. By documenting good practice, it offers a range of practical responses to one of Europe?s most pressing dilemmas.
