Title: Environment-related employment in the Netherlands, 1997
Title (other): prepared for DG Environment and Eurostat
Abstract
In the second half of 1999 Statistics Netherlands carried out an ad hoc project on environment-related employment in the Netherlands. The European Commission co-financed this project under the Community programme Environmental protection and employment. Direct environment-related employment in the Netherlands estimated at least at 92,000 (end of 1997), which is about 1,3 % of total employment. Some 34,000 of these jobs were in local and central government.[Author vide copyright]

Title: Analysis of the EU eco-industries, their employment and export potential
Title (other): A final report to DG Environment
Abstract
This study has collated available environmental expenditure data on the market for goods and services produced by eco-industries in both the EU-15 and the Candidate Countries, as the basis for describing the economic significance of the sector, including employment levels. Whilst there are gaps and inconsistencies in the available data sets, only limited estimation procedures are required to derive a detailed and rigorous basis for economic analysis. The study also provides insights into the export capabilities of EU Member States, particularly their relationship with the Candidate Countries. For the purposes of this study, eco-industries have been defined according to the definition contained in 'The Environmental Goods and Services Industry - Manual for Data Collection and Analysis' (OECD/Eurostat, 1999). This defines eco-industries as 'activities which produce goods and services to measure, prevent, limit, minimise or correct environmental damage to water, air and soil, as well as problems related to waste, noise and eco-systems. This includes cleaner technologies, products and services that reduce environmental risk and minimise pollution and resource use'.[Author vide copyright]

Title: Working conditions in the acceding and candidate countries
Title (other): Conditions de travail dans les pays adhérents et candidats
Abstract
The Foundation carried out its Third European Working Conditions Survey in the 15 Member States of the EU in 2000. In 2001, the survey was extended to cover the 12 acceding and candidate countries and the following year the survey included Turkey. The aim was to provide an overview for EU policymakers as they set about shaping the contours of the new European Union. This document summarises some of the main findings in the survey that was carried out in the 12 acceding and candidate countries in 2001. The 12 acceding and candidate countries comprise a total population of 96 million, with approximately 43 million persons in paid employment. Two countries alone - Poland and Romania - account for over half the total population and workforce of the candidate countries (25 million). There are considerable structural differences to be found in comparison with the EU labour market. For example, a higher proportion of workers are engaged in agriculture: this accounts for one fifth (21%) of all jobs in the acceding and candidate countries, in contrast to only one twentieth (5%) in the EU. Conversely, the services sector is less important in the acceding and candidate countries, accounting for 47% of all jobs, compared to 66% in the EU. This last fact has a bearing on the numbers of employees and self-employed workers in the workforce. In the acceding and candidate countries, 77% of workers are employees (compared to 83% in the EU), with 3% of these on temporary employment agency contracts (2% in the EU). Until recently, such contracts were unheard of in the former communist countries. It will be interesting to monitor the evolution of this kind of work in the future, given the recent rapid growth. A higher proportion of workers in the acceding and candidate countries hold down a second job (10%) than in the EU (6%). They also devote more time to their second job, on average 17.8 hours a week. Finally, the average age of workers in the acceding and candidate countries is higher: over half of all workers (51%) are above t

Title: Un travail attractif pour tous : Contributions à la stratégie de Lisbonne au niveau de l'entreprise
Abstract

Title: ERM case studies: Employment impact of relocation of multinational companies across the EU
Abstract
This report examines shifts in the pattern of production and employment between different countries and regions of Europe. Based on findings from a series of company case studies, it looks at the location of job creation and job destruction in multinational companies across the 25 EU Member States and Norway. A variety of factors, notably the ever-changing patterns of competition on world markets and technological advances, enter into a company’s strategic thinking and actions when it comes to location decisions. This has inevitable consequences for employment, as companies expand production in some locations and seek to rationalise production and employment in others. This study aims to summarise and illustrate these processes to allow for a better understanding of multinational companies’ location decisions.[Eurofound]

Title: Investing in the future of jobs and skills : Financial services - Final report
Abstract
In 2007, 5.6 million persons were employed in EU27 financial services. 65% of these worked in banks, 20% in the insurance industry and 15% for intermediaries. The sector represented 2.7% of total employment in Europe. Between 2000 and 2006, data from the Labour Force Survey shows a shift of occupational structure from medium-skilled persons to highly-skilled persons. The need for a highly educated and trained workforce appears to be evident in all parts of the financial services sector and all European countries.[Eurofound]

Title: Skills scenarios for the textiles, wearing apparel and leather products sector in the European Union pparel and leather
products : Final report
Title (other): Investing in the future of jobs and skills : Textiles, wearing apparel and leather products ; Final report
Abstract
The European textiles, clothing and leather sector (TCL) lost 40% of its production volume and 40% of its jobs at the same time within a ten year period from 1996. It had to accept continuously rising import shares from low-cost countries – China in particular. The phasing out of the Agreement on Textiles and Clothing in 2005 gave a further push to this trend. Mass-production largely disappeared from high-wage areas in the EU while low-cost areas – the New Member States, Portugal and Greece – could keep at least some parts of TCL production.[Eurofound]
