Title: The road from landfilling to recycling: common destination, different routes
Abstract
The EEA and its Topic Centre on Resource and Waste Management has carried out a survey of municipal waste policies and trends across the EU-25, and has consolidated the results into one easily-referenced source: a set of 25 country factsheets, freely available at http://waste.eionet. europa.eu/etcwmf/publications/factsheet. The factsheets contain information about: u0095 national legislative frameworks on waste; u0095 national policies, implemented or planned, to shift waste management practices in a less environmentally harmful direction according to the waste hierarchy; u0095 data on waste generation and management; u0095 list of tools and instruments, implemented or planned at national or regional level that aim to manage municipal waste and used tyres according to the waste hierarchy.[Author vide copyright]

Title: Paper and cardboard ? recovery or disposal?
Title (other): Review of life cycle assessment and cost-benefit analysis on the recovery and disposal of paper and cardboard
Abstract
To provide a solid basis for policies and policymaking in the field of waste management, the environmental and economic impacts caused by different waste treatment options should be examined. In recent years, a large number of studies comparing recycling with recovery or final disposal have been published, which are based on life cycle assessment (LCA) and cost-benefit analysis (CBA). To the frustration of policy-makers, experts and, not least the public at large, the results from these studies often differ greatly, and are even sometimes directly conflicting. Therefore, it would be of value to evaluate the robustness of these studies and their conclusions, and to clarify the reasons why results apparently differ so much. This is the overall purpose of the present project. Studies using LCAs and CBAs for comparison of waste management options for paper and cardboard have been reviewed.[Author vide copyright]

Title: The European environment – state and outlook 2010
Title (other): Material resources and waste
Abstract
The European economy needs huge amounts of resources to function. Apart from consuming minerals, metals, concrete and wood, Europe burns fossil fuels and uses land to satisfy the needs of its citizens. Demand for materials is so intense that between 20 and 30 % of the resources we use are now imported. At the other end of the materials chain, the EU economy generates around six tons of waste per person every year. With the boom in international trade, EU consumption and production may potentially damage ecosystems and human health not only within but also far beyond its borders.[Author vide copyright]
