Title: Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria : Analysis of National Reports on the Implementation of the United Nations Convention to
Combat Desertification (UNCCD)
Abstract
This review, commissioned by the European Commission DG-Development, Brussels, presents a brief analysis of the national implementation reports submitted by Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria. These countries span two CCD regions as Turkey is considered as part of the Northern Mediterranean while the other countries are considered as part of the Asian region. Regional annexes to the Convention have been developed by relevant Parties detailing the particular conditions and priority concerns of each region. However cross-regional co-operation is strongly encouraged.[Author vide copyright]

Title: Millennium Development Goals at Midpoint : Where do we stand?
Abstract
The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are the expression of the strong commitment to universal development and poverty eradication made by the International Community in the UN Millennium Declaration. They include halving world poverty and hunger by 2015, as well as reaching universal primary education, reducing under-5 and maternal mortality by two thirds, and halving the number of people without access to safe drinking water. At the same time, the Declaration called for a new partnership between the developed and the developing countries, determined “to create an environment – at the national and global levels alike – which is conducive to development and the elimination of poverty.” The developed countries had to ease market access, lessen the debt burden, channel financial resources and provide development assistance to the developing world, which, on its side, had to improve governance and conduct effective development policies.[Author vide copyright]
